Beheaded - Ingrid Tremblay

Cette œuvre est principalement née de mon constat qu’un chou est très beau lorsqu’on le coupe. Une coupe transversale d’un chou rouge ressemble à une peinture en elle-même. Chaque couche marque le passage du temps, la multiplication cellulaire permettant au chou de croitre, une couche à la fois. Le titre Beheaded (signifiant « décapité » en français) réfère à un passage de Cyrano, rapporté par Italo Calvino dans Six Memos for the Next Millenium. Calvino, affirme que “Cyrano at last proclaims the brotherhood of men and cabbages, and thus imagines the protest of a cabbage about to be beheaded: ‘Man, my dear brother, what have I done to you, to deserve death?’.ˮ Ce passage serait l’ancêtre de la théorie de l’ontologie orientée vers l’objet, qui rejette l’idée que l’existence humaine prime sur le reste.

This work was mainly born from my observation that a cabbage is very beautiful when cut. A cross section of a red cabbage looks like a painting in itself. Each layer marks the passage of time, cell multiplication allowing the cabbage to grow, one layer at a time. The title Beheaded refers to a passage from Cyrano, reported by Italo Calvino in Six Memos for the Next Millennium. Calvino, states that “Cyrano at last proclaims the brotherhood of men and cabbages, and thus imagines the protest of a cabbage about to be beheaded: ’Man, my dear brother, what have I done to you, to deserve death?ˮ This passage would be the ancestor of the theory of object-oriented ontology, which rejects the idea that human existence takes precedence over everything else.
